I haven't worked with Adaptec, so I don't know how difficult it will be to 
install/setup.  With the 3ware, I just installed the distro and it recognized 
the card an set up the drivers automatically.  I didn't have to touch a 
thing.  But then, most closed source drivers aren't included in the distros 
for them to be automatically set up/installed.  

My main experience with closed source drivers is the nvidia drivers.  The 
install is mostly painless and fairly quick.  It's even a lot better then it 
used to be.  Like I said, my main concern is that it works with little to no 
fuss.  If the Adaptec drivers are a pain to setup/upgrade/etc, then I'll 
probably go 3ware.
