Yeah, sorry.  I ran
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

And rebuilt my xorg.conf (below) and I have the same issue of screen
lighting, but blank, and ctrl-alt-backspace not killing X.  I can log
in via SSH, that was a red herring.

So if there is something you want me to look at after I've done
startx, I can ssh and poke around.
