For a more non technical user, have you looked at freespire? They have
the click-n-run service (http://www.cnr.com/ ) which will also soon be
running on Ubuntu and other distro's, that allows you to click on the
app, even some commercial ones, that you want, and it then installs to
your machine and you can use it. Free apps as well as commercial apps
are available this way.
