That's because it's not asking for you to login as root. It's asking you to
confirm yourself for a sudo operation.
I'm running Ubuntu-server on my server and Kubuntu on my desktop now, and I'm
quite happy with both. The "lack of root" has never been an issue for me,
not once. If I actually need to do a lot of things as root and don't feel
like sudo-ing every command, I just do:
sudo su -
Enter my own password, and poof, a root prompt. Really, the "lack of root"
thing is nowhere near the issue some people make it out to be.
