It doesn't matter whether you use 586A or B. 586B tend to be used more
in commercial and 586A in residential. As long as both ends are wired
to the same standard (or for that mean same color scheme of any kind)
you have a straight through cable (pin 1 to pin 1 ... pin 8 to pin 8).
A crossover cable is made from having one 586A end and one 586B end.
FYI: I sometimes plan and install structured wiring so I do have some
experience in this.
A switch to switch connection should be done using a crossover cable
unless the switch has auto mdi/mid--x (many newer ones do but older ones
don't). This may be why you don't get a light (depending on age).
