You can build it either way.  I build my early sarge
boxes with 2.4 because they ran better.  2.6 has
better hardware detection and has become much more
stable over time.

I have never had much luck with wireless on Linux. 
The best I ever had was with RedHat 9 on a dell laptop
that worked pretty much out of the box with an orinoco
card.
