Like all communities it depends on who you run into, but overall the 
Gentoo community is one of the best. For all the accusations of insane 
compiler flags there is very little of that actually going on... though 
a "software raid is faster than hardware raid" discussion on 
gentoo-server last year did boggle my mind.

Oddly I find every other Gentoo Postfix how-to much better than the 
official one. The reason is that it makes a number of tradeoffs in order 
to support virtual mailman without telling you it is doing so. 
Additionally a number of critical areas are not highlighted with a big 
"don't screw this part up" with blink tags that would be nice. I 
probably have 300+ posts in the Gentoo forums on exactly those problems. 
IMO the gentoo-wiki how-to's are much better.
