Funny my experience has been completely the opposite.  I'm sure there
are a few bad apples out there I just haven't hit any yet (and I go to
forums.gentoo.org a fair amount).  That said there is a lot of
documentation available so you should check that out before asking
questions otherwise people will probably refer you to it.

Gentoo is by no means the easiest distro to use but IMO the community is
one of its biggest strengths.
