I completely agree. I have been using Gentoo for about 2 years now, and
the only thing keeping me from ditching it is the large and helpful
community. By "community" Trev and I seem to be talking about the huge
forum at gentoo.org - perhaps there's another experience to be had some
place else. Gentoo's biggest problem, for me at least, is that Portage,
the package management system, has fallen into some disrepair. Lately
you never know if your system will work after the next update, and the
burden seems to be on the user to fix the problems that routinely crop
up. If it weren't for the friendly and knowledgeable people on the forum
to help with these issues, I certainly would not have stuck with Gentoo
so long. In fact, it has felt at times that the great community was its
only redeeming feature! I'm sure this post won't convince anyone to
switch to Gentoo, but at least you might avoid it for the right reason.
