[LUNI] Sloooooooow

Over the weekend I installed SUSE 10.2 on an IBM T30 (a P4-M 1.8GHz).  On a
stock install of Gnome and minimal software packages, the system is
surprisingly slow.  For instance it took several minutes to move 105 MB from
one directory to another.  Opening Firefox took about 30 seconds.

Is there an obvious thing I'm missing here?  I've considered switching over
to one of the other distros, such as Ubuntu or Fedora to see if that helps.

Also, what are the nearest Linux user group meetings around the far-west
burbs?
