I am using opensSuSe 10.2 (i386) on my desktop and response is
acceptable (RAM: 1GB, CPU AMD64/2.0GHz). How much RAM do you have?

A few years ago a similar scenario happened to me on a Toshiba Tecra
8000 (256MB, PII-366). Originally the system response was OK but over
time it became slow. It turned to be the hard disk. Eventually, it
RIP'd.
