putting either a matched pair or using a single DIMM won't matter much
at all in a board without dual channel support. But on a board with dual
channel support, you have to have paired DIMMs to take advantage of the
performance gain, something to do with dealing with latency. Also, Intel
based boards take advantage of dual channel speed increases better than
AMD based ones (for 32-bit systems, for 64-bit systems that's another
matter).  They also mention that in the event one of your DIMMs should
crap out, you'll still be able to limp by on one until you get a
replacement
