[LUNI] SMS messaging.

I am looking for a way to send text messages from a small LAN that is *NOT connected to the internet to mobile phones?  I have looked briefly at gammu, but have not idea how it works or if its the best way to go.  I also take it that I need to buy a GSM modem?  Does anyone have any experience/advice in this are that they could share?
