Kubuntu may give you problems with wireless. I have just tried for the
second time to get it working on my Sony Vaio which also uses an Intel
chip and the Atheros drivers. Both times I gave up in frustration.
Yesterday I blew away the partition containing Kubuntu and am going to
try Open SuSe as Novel Suse (which I won't use for obvious reasons)
worked flawlessly.

The problem I had was with Feisty and was the same thing which caused me
to abandon an earlier version. I can see my AP, even able to see the
wireless MAC with SSID broadcast off. I had to scrape around to find
all the WPA supplicant stuff since it doesn't install by default and it
still refuses to authenticate. Plus the KDE GUI programs hang with
amazing frequency.

Not for nuthin' You can get Ubuntu pre-installed on a select number of
Dell Latitude laptops.
