I think the general consensus is that there are certain type of failures of disk drives that will show up in the SMART generated log (in that the drive announces "I am about to die ....") and others that won't.
And what is the conclusion?
- There is just no way of avoiding backups.
- If SMART indicates that the drive is going do die fairly soon, then one at least has some warning (better than none). What one does with the warning
(assume failures show up one morning starting at 1AM and one is alerted / paged), is a different story: replace the drive right away, or wait till one
comes to the office (at 9AM) or whatever ....
