My brother experienced the same problem.  He was losing his internet
connection every couple of hours and they told him to remove the router
and run "naked to the world" for a day or two to see if that solved the
problem.

He was savvy enough to ask the guy who would help him remove all the
spyware crap and remove viruses and restore the data that would get
hosed on his computer during that time.

Actually, in his case, I think it is the router causing the problem as
he happened to be looking at it when it did a spontaneous reboot.  I
think there's a CPU issue in it or a bad power supply, but this is the
first time I have seen this be the cause of a problem.
