If you would read the responses, you will find that Marten Mickos states
that MySQL planned this prior to the acquisition by Sun. He even hints
that there is a possibility that Sun will stop it. 

It really pisses me off that some Open Source advocates like to attack
Sun. Over time, Sun has done more for Open Source than any other
company. Although far from perfect, Sun is an ally that we should
recognize and commend.
