A good hotrodder always gets a baseline to work from before beginning modifications. It's an old racing adage, but it is appropriate here as well. Mine wasn't advice to "deal with Windows," but rather to cover oneself, warranty-wise, in case the hardware, out of the box, had some sort of fault that the manufacturer could then pawn off as user abuse caused by modifying the approved/installed software configuration.
   
  I'd hate to go and tell someone to just throw Linux on a new, untested piece of hardware, have them find out that there was a problem with the hardware, and then have them swallowing four hundred plus dollars when the manufacturer denied to fix the problem because the user had voided the warranty by following the advice to modify it.
   
  As yourself, I am also sending this from an XP machine (at work I have no choice), but three of my four personal machines are loaded with various flavors of Linux.
