In fact, that's not completely true either. What you describe (an
unlocked SIM/CDMA phone) exists already, and is available from Sprint:

Note - I also have worked at T-Mobile, and the only reason I don't
consider them as evil as AT&T is that they're not as good at it -
yet. :-) They treat their employee's, and contractors _very_ poorly,
which is the primary standard by which I judge any company. I've heard
lots of good customer feedback about them, I will admit.
