We had smb+openldap working on our own Intranet server.  I recall that 
we had to install the "smbldap-tools" package as well as muck around 
with PAM files.  

It might be worthwhile exploring the smbldap-tools package if you have 
not done so.

Unfortunately, the admin who did this did not document all the steps.  
He started behaving strangely forcing me to fire him before he could do 
further damage to us.  To make matters worse, the hdd system on which 
this was working crashed and I have not been able to recreate the 
config files.
