I can't speak to importing mail.  I was using straight POP3 stuff prior to this.  I was really looking for a simple IMAPS solution for my home mail server (could never really get a good IMAPS attachment for qmail).
As for Thunderbird, I don't use it much (I'm more of a Mac guy for my desktops), but it works fine when I have had to use it.  However I mainly use the web interface or the Mail.app client.  It can integrate with LDAP, but I don't have an LDAP server for my contacts.  So the only thing that's lacking for me is integration with the Apple Address Book.  I think the paid version has a sync feature for that, but the Free version doesn't have a lot or those plugins.
I will say though that the mobile interface for it is REALLY nice.
