Expect and expect-lite (http://expect-lite.sourceforge.net/).

I have more experience automating software testing, for that I recommend 
Mike Clark's book "Pragmatic Project Automation for Java" 
(http://www.pragprog.com/titles/auto). But there are loads of software 
automation titles.
