[LUNI] Ubuntu: java plugin for firefox

By default, Ubuntu uses an implementation of Java that is not always recognized, particularly by web sites. You need to first download Sun Java from the Ubuntu repositories. This can be accomplished easiest via Synatptic, but can also be done via apt-get. You want the Java 6 JRE package.

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre

Once this has been installed, you have to tell the system that the new version has joined the fold and is default.

sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun

You will also want to do the following. Open the file /etc/jvm in your favorite editor. This should be done as Root using the sudo command. To the top of the file add the following line, then save and exit.

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun

Hi all,
I have tried to install a java plugin for Ubuntu 8.10 on my Toshiba
Satellite L305 with an Intel Pentium Dual-Core (T3200 chip). It has had
no effect. Since my beloved CODlug is on hiatus I have no choice but to
ask here. I have tried to follow the instructions from the CODlug.org
website "Ubuntu Help community" but it doesn't seem to have the
exact
information for 8.10. In Firefox under Tools there is "Manage Content
Plug-ins" but its grayed.
