The method depends on whether you need to back up the entire windows 7
partition, or if you just need data.
I would recommend doing a clonezilla image to the SMB share first, so
you have a nice compressed backup you can recover from if it all goes
pear shaped.
Then copy the necessary data, from C:\users as well as any driver
folders you may want.
You can do all that using partedmagic live cd and clonezilla live cd (or
I would recommend building a nice usb tool using both of those from the
pendrivelinux site. You can make a partedmagic live usb drive that also
gives you clonezilla at the boot prompt.
DD is nice, and will hopefully copy everything in one swift move,
however, DD will copy the whole partition, so if it is a 250GB
partition, you have filled your share with 250GB of nothing. (correct me
if I am wrong anyone?)
