This sounds like one I've heard before.  If I remember correctly, it
goes like this:

The MTA is NOT REQUIRED to supply a valid sender address, though it
also is NOT PROHIBITED from doing so.  But it's really the MUA's job,
so you should configure your mail tool to fill in a valid address
there.  The difference in behavior is due to the fact that one MTA is
setup to reject an ill-formed sender address from you while the other
tries to patch it up.
