I did a quick google on the error message "not registering due to another framebuffer present"
and got this link: http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/48585/
which says the problem is that the system is loading the vga16fb after anohter frame buffer is loaded and that is causing the problem. They say problem might be fixed in Ubunut10.10.
Hope that helps.

Subject: [LUNI] Ubuntu and ATI FirePro 2260 (PCI) cards
Hi all-
Been banging my head trying to get a new dual head ATI FirePro 2260 (PCI, dual DisplayPort outputs) card working with Ubuntu 10.04. I have an existing dual head ATI FireGL V3400 card in the PCI-E slot. The new card (to give me a total of 4) is in a plain old PCI slot.
The V3400 works seamlessly. However, the new card will only display one port instead of two. I removed the V3400 and just tried driving two monitors with the new one, to no avail. It will only open one port and one port only.
1- ruled out a HW failure on the part of the adapter, it works fine in another #shudder* XP system. Both of them actually run, producing 4 displays.
2- could it be that I need the ATI/Radeon 'proprietary' drivers from the ubuntu repository?
This is the following from my syslog:
